Interior painters in Wayzata, MN
Wayzata homes tend to have more trim, more millwork and better finishes than average — which means the details matter more and there's less room to be sloppy. That suits how I work.
More trim than the average house
Wayzata is a small city with an unusually wide range of housing — older character homes in the streets above Lake Street, mid-century houses tucked into the wooded lots, and newer builds and renovations closer to Lake Minnetonka. What a lot of them share is millwork: crown moulding, wainscoting and panelling, built-in cabinetry and shelving, deep window casings, real stair balustrades.
That changes the shape of a painting job completely. On a plain bedroom, most of the time goes on rolling. On a Wayzata dining room with a chair rail, panelled wainscot and crown, most of the time goes on brushwork — slow, close-up, hand-cut work where every line is visible from three feet away. It costs more because it takes longer, and there is no version of it that goes fast.
It's also the most satisfying work there is, and it's the reason I like these houses.
Being careful in a house worth being careful in
The things I do on every job matter more here: floors covered wall to wall rather than a drop cloth under the ladder, hardware removed instead of taped around, furniture properly protected before anything opens. Refinished hardwood, stone entryways and good cabinetry are not surfaces you want to find out about after the fact.
I also work alone, which is worth saying out loud. There's no rotating crew coming through your house and no unfamiliar names in your entryway. The person who gave you the estimate is the person in the room every day.
Older homes and what I check first
Some of Wayzata's best housing is genuinely old, and older houses have quirks that decide the whole approach:
- Plaster instead of drywall — it patches differently, cracks differently, and shouldn't be treated like modern board.
- Old oil-based paint on trim — extremely common in pre-war and mid-century woodwork. Latex over it without a bonding primer will not hold.
- Layers of previous paint on millwork — enough coats and the crisp profile of a moulding starts to disappear. Sometimes the right answer is a lighter touch, not another heavy coat.
- Build year. Homes from before 1978 can have lead paint underneath, and federal rules govern disturbing it. Tell me the age of the house when you call and I'll tell you straight where I stand on it rather than finding out mid-job.

All of Wayzata, plus the immediately surrounding lake communities — Orono, Long Lake, Deephaven and the Ferndale and Bushaway areas. It's about fifteen minutes from Plymouth, so it's comfortably inside my normal working radius.
