Interior painters in Maple Grove, MN
Maple Grove is full of houses with two-story entryways and vaulted great rooms — the exact walls most people can't paint themselves. That's normal work for me, and it's a short drive from Plymouth.
The tall-wall problem
Maple Grove built out mostly from the 1990s onward, right when open floor plans and dramatic entryways were the thing every builder was selling. The result is a city full of houses with a two-story foyer, a great room open to above, and a stairwell wall that runs from the basement landing to the second-floor ceiling.
Those walls are exactly where DIY painting stops. You can't reach them from a step ladder, an extension pole gives you an uneven finish and no control at the cut line, and standing an extension ladder on a stair tread is how people get badly hurt. They also tend to be the most visible walls in the entire house — the first thing anyone sees walking in.
Staging tall walls safely and cutting a clean line at a 20-foot ceiling is skilled, careful work. It's slower than painting a bedroom and it costs more, and when you get the estimate you'll see why. What you shouldn't do is try it yourself off a ladder on the stairs.
Builder-grade paint, ten years on
Almost every production-built house in Maple Grove came with the same thing: flat builder white or a flat greige, one thin coat, everywhere. It photographs fine and it's cheap to apply at scale, and it has two real problems.
- It can't be washed. Flat paint scrubs off. Try to clean a scuff in a Maple Grove hallway and you'll take the paint with it, leaving a shiny spot that's more obvious than the mark was.
- It's thin. One builder coat over new drywall means the wall has very little on it. Marks go straight through to the primer.
Repainting high-traffic areas — hallways, stairwells, mudrooms, kids' rooms — in a washable eggshell or satin is one of the highest-value things you can do to a house of this vintage. It stops looking worn out and starts cleaning up with a damp cloth.
Getting rid of the beige
The other thing these houses came with is a builder palette: tan, greige, or "Accessible Beige" carried through every single room with no breaks. It was neutral by design, and it now dates a house instantly. Painting the main floor in a current warm white and letting the trim and floors do the work makes a 2003 house read like a much newer one, for a fraction of what any other renovation costs.
